A large number of people appeared for the Christmas party/caving weekend.
We decided that there were too many to all go down Rumbling, even with separated rigging & de-rigging crews.
After some indecision we split into 3 groups:
The Rumbling team (Ade, 2 Pauls, Al & Janis). The plan being to leave most of the cave rigged so that some of the others could have an easy trip the following day.
The Tatham Wife team (Keith, Becky, Lukasz, Steve, Alan & Dave). Again leaving the cave rigged for de-rigging the following day.
And finally the Jean Pot team (Rich, Alex & Phil) with a last minute decision as to which cave to do.
We drove to the layby near(ish) White Scar cave, changed and set off up the hill at about 11:00. After a bit of wandering (mainly up hill) we found the cave at about 12:00.
We wandered down the meandering passage to the first pitch, normally an easy 3-4m climb, today it had a reasonable amount of water on it, so rigging and abseiling was required to keep you reasonably dry.
After a few more meanders and a couple of interesting climbs down we came to the second pitch. This has a slightly awkward deviation to pull the rope away from the water.
This lead immediately to the third pitch, with a short but interesting traverse and another deviation.
There was then a section of caving to reach the top of the ramp, a split pitch with another deviation near the top and a slot and re-belay about half way down.
Most of the team visited the duck, but no one was keen to do it, so we tidied the rope on the ramp and left the bag of rope for the final pitch at the top of the ramp before heading out.
We passed a group from Imperial College at the head of the third pitch (lead by a chap called Andy who sent greetings to Emma, Rich & Damian) before getting out of the cave at about 16:30.
Keith & Lukasz lead the charge down the hill, to get back to the cars not long after 17:00 where we changed quickly before heading back to the hut for the party.
There was a bit of snow overnight and most of the revellers were not overly keen on caving on the Sunday.
Dave, Ros & Lukasz headed off to Leck to de-rig Rumbling Hole, but were unable to get onto the fell due to the icy conditions on the lane. We will try to get there again next weekend.
Phil, Rob, Neil & Ade went up to Tatham Wife and successfully de-rigged that.
