With 10 people on the Wales trip, we really needed two trips to make it viable. Ros elected to walk on the first day, so we were down to 9.
Lukasz was keen on a "Short" Round Trip in Ogof Draenen and Robin and Phil were "keen" to go with him. Loz, a leader who knows the system reasonably well agreed to guide them.
That left us with 6, some of whom wanted "something pretty". I decided to give Craig a Ffynnon a go.
Key collected we headed over to the parking, changed and walked past the lime kilns and up the hill to the entrance.
After a little faff we were into the cave. We passed quickly through the damp section (where the water level was lower than I had seen it before), up the "chain" climb (now replaced with a rope and foot plates) and into the boulder choke.
The boulder choke leads to the muddy section of the cave and then the beginning of the decorated section before Hall of the Mountain King. This is an impressive chamber with a high roof liberally decorated with calcite.
The way on is the Long Crawl. This starts slightly awkwardly with a couple of fairly tight sections before becoming a proper crawl. It ends at the Severn Tunnel which is another large (walking) passage.
We turned right near the beginning of Severn Tunnel to enter another decorated chamber and the way into boulder choke 4. Most of the team decided that they had had their fill of the cave at this point and turned back 20m or so from the far end of the choke.
Ade and I continued past the passage down to the Promised Land and into Helictite Passage where we took many photos before starting on our way back.
We caught up with the others just before boulder choke 2 and the chain climb.

About

There are many club organised caving weekends, with a mixture of easy and difficult caving.  Over the past few years we have given lots of people the opportunity to experience caving with our "Try Caving" events.  These are quite popular and quite a few people have subsequently joined the club. We have YSS members caving most weekends so it is easy for new cavers to tag onto the easier caving trips and find people to help with more training.
