Stomping up the steep ascent  felt a little harder than normal after the previous days rather damp descent of Black shiver, but what better way to round off the weekend with the descent of another classic Yorkshire pot, Rowten!!On arrival at the shaft this also looked like being another moist descent judging from the roar below and the plumes of water vapor emanating from the far end, it was at this point and i cant figure out why, myself and Dave began reciting the words to "Cool for Cats" which we both knew pretty well, any way back to the caving we split into two groups with myself and Dave rigging Gully route, and Phil, Paul and Claire doing the Eyehole route, we planned to join up where the two routes join before carrying on to the bottom. Dave set off enthusiastically  rigging down gully route, to the point where you cross the streamway where he got rather hammered (see the video ha!) by the force of the water this seemed to completely dampen any of the previous  enthusiasm he had so he handed over the rigging to me, it was certainly a challenge to get across with the slippy rock with the volume of water but i made it over. The rest of the route was exciting with the water levels but we made it to the bottom of the chamber ok to meet up with the others, there was as expected a lot of spray  so it was decided to sack off going to the bottom as this would involve a lot of waiting around getting cold, this turned out to be a good call as we met another painfully slow group coming down and it had started rain so getting stuck with the slow bunch and added water would have been pretty high on the misery scale!!The route out presented some good photo opportunities with two groups if i could have stopped spinning on the rope that is!!, exiting to a wet miserable downpour which got worse as we got changed. One of the things i love about caving are the informative and interesting conversations you quite often get that seem to come out of nowhere, not sure how we ended up discussing in the car on the way back, the "pro's and con's" of using a "Shewee", i never really appreciated technique required if you need to know anymore, Claire is your girl!!

About

There are many club organised caving weekends, with a mixture of easy and difficult caving.  Over the past few years we have given lots of people the opportunity to experience caving with our "Try Caving" events.  These are quite popular and quite a few people have subsequently joined the club. We have YSS members caving most weekends so it is easy for new cavers to tag onto the easier caving trips and find people to help with more training.
