The YSS is now 44 years old (in 2008) and boy have we seen some antics in our varied times with the club.
We have seen plenty of YSS Caving Expeditions to varied regions around the world and plenty of diversity within the club. This years' expedition (September 2008) was to Illumina (BU56) . It was organised by our expedition-organising guru Colin Gray along with Jason Mallinson. The expedition was a success with Jason diving into new territory and other members of the team improving the rigging in the caves and removing old rubbish. The YSS tend to be a club of stealth, we don't stand and shout about it, but just ask around - we are out there in various small groups and twice a month in larger groups (organised meets) and we are doing it! Caving, Climbing, Walking, Cave Diving, Cycling, Digging and Socialising you name it - it's all going on within our club. Caving weekends are generally (but not exclusively) planned to be in the Dales and include a mixture of easy and difficult caving. Some members are also up for really silly difficult trips, but they organise these themselves. Some of the newer events on the calender are the Try-Caving events. Over the past few years we have given lots of people the opportunity to experience caving and quite a few have subsequently joined the club. This success has led to the introduction of some planned novice trips. Many of the Newsletters from the last few years are available on the site. We are hoping to expand this section further. Main articles from the Newsletters are also available in the "Articles from" section of the site, which allows you to find interesting articles more easily and is also available to the general public. Have a look at this section to see what members have been up to both recently and in the past. In the YSS we are very proud of our Hostel (the School) as it offers some of the best bunkhouse accommodation in the Dales at a reasonable price in a good location.... |

Sima de las Puertas de Illamina (BU56) |
|
Saturday, 23 August 2008 - Saturday, 13 September 2008
Recently I was very lucky to join a YSS expedition to the Sima de las Puertas de Illamina (BU56), which at a depth of just over 1,400m is one of the deepest caves in the world. The cave is located in the Spanish Pyrenees only a few miles from the deep and popular Reseau de la Pierre Saint Martin.
The entrance was discovered by Jean-François Pernette and I. Ortilles in 1979. That day Pernette reached a depth of -92m after passing the extremely narrow meander N. In the following two years, expeditions followed in which many famous French cavers participated; such as J-F Pernette, Richard Maire, Serge Fulcrand, Gerard Bouteiller and Georges Marbach. They pushed the cave to a depth of -1338m; making it the deepest in the world. Fred Vergier dived the terminal sump of the cave and two following sumps. In 1986 and 1987 a Bulgarian expedition dived three more sumps, stopping before sump 7. This fantastic achievement brought the depth of the cave to -1408m. |
